The Department of Computer Science encompasses areas of traditional computer science but also has efforts in broader areas of computing, analytics, and informatics. These include cutting edge efforts in visualization/visual analytics, serious games, and knowledge systems/discovery. The breadth of CS is revealed in both its curriculum and research.

The CS Department has 35 faculty members, a large Ph.D. program, and over 1,200 students. It has leading research efforts in visualization and visual analytics, robotics, machine intelligence, serious games, mobile networked systems, and databases and knowledge discovery. It is part of the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) along with the Departments of Software and Information Systems and Bioinformatics and Genomics. CCI is the university leader in external funding per faculty member and has one of the largest Ph.D. program at UNC Charlotte.
